About Down Cut End Mills
Down cut end mills use reverse-helix flute geometry that directs chips downward toward the workpiece. This can help reduce top-surface chipping and tear-out, making them especially useful when a clean top edge is important.
Where Down Cut End Mills Work Well
Down-cut end mills are commonly used for shallow slotting, profiling, trimming, and finishing in plastics, laminates, composites, wood products, and other materials where top-surface finish matters.
Why Choose Down Cut
By pushing chips downward, down-cut geometry helps hold thin or flexible material against the work surface while reducing lifting and top-edge breakout. The tradeoff is that chip evacuation is generally less efficient than with an up-cut tool.
Important Chip-Evacuation Consideration
Because chips are directed downward, use conservative cutting depths and ensure adequate chip clearance. Deep slots can trap chips, increase heat, and accelerate tool wear, so down-cut tools are generally best suited to shallower cutting where top-edge quality is the priority.
Choosing Length of Cut (LOC)
Choose an LOC appropriate for the actual cutting depth. Avoid using more cutting length than necessary, since longer tools generally have less rigidity and may be more prone to deflection.
