1.00mm (.0394") 2-Flute Down-Cut Square End Carbide End Mill – M2-120

This 1.00mm (.0394") solid carbide down-cut end mill features a .300" length of cut, 2-flute square end geometry, 1.50" overall length, and a standard 1/8" shank. Its down-cut spiral geometry is designed for precision CNC milling, profiling, and routing applications where clean top-surface edges and fine detail cutting are important.

Unlike conventional up-cut end mills, which tend to pull chips upward, the down-cut flute direction pushes chips toward the workpiece. This can help reduce lifting and top-edge fraying in wood, MDF, laminated materials, and certain plastics or composites.

The .300" length of cut provides useful cutting reach for narrow profiles, contours, and detailed routing operations. Because down-cut geometry directs chips downward, careful chip management is particularly important when cutting deeper slots and enclosed pockets.

The 2-flute square end geometry is suitable for slots, profiles, contours, pockets, and flat-bottom features. Solid tungsten carbide construction provides rigidity and wear resistance, while the polished flutes offer smooth cutting surfaces.

Common Applications

  • Precision CNC milling and fine-detail routing
  • Small slots, profiles, pockets, and contours
  • Wood and MDF machining where clean top edges are important
  • Plastic and acrylic machining
  • Laminated sheet and panel materials
  • Detailed engraving and precision routing
  • Selected fiberglass and composite applications with suitable machining parameters
  • Selected non-ferrous materials when chip evacuation and cutting conditions are appropriate

Down-Cut vs. Up-Cut End Mills

Down-cut end mills direct chips downward toward the workpiece and can help maintain cleaner top edges in materials prone to lifting, chipping, or fraying.

Up-cut end mills direct chips upward and are often preferable when chip evacuation is the primary concern, particularly in deeper slots or pockets.

Choose the flute direction based on the material, desired edge finish, cutting depth, and chip evacuation requirements.

Important Machining Considerations

At just 1.00mm cutting diameter with a .300" flute length, this tool requires careful machining. Use rigid workholding, precision toolholding, minimal spindle runout, appropriate spindle speeds, conservative cutting depths, and carefully selected feed rates.

Down-cut caution: Because chips are directed downward, avoid allowing chips to pack into narrow slots or enclosed pockets. Use suitable chip clearing, shallow passes, and appropriate cutting parameters. Excessive chip accumulation, tool loading, or deflection can lead to poor cutting performance or tool breakage.
