1/8" (.1250", 3.175mm) 2-Flute Down-Cut Square End Carbide End Mill – M2-170

This 1/8" (.1250" / 3.175mm) solid carbide down-cut end mill features a .600" length of cut, 2-flute square end geometry, 1.50" overall length, and a standard 1/8" shank. It is designed for precision CNC routing, profiling, contouring, and detailed cutting where clean top-surface edges are important.

The down-cut spiral geometry directs chips downward toward the workpiece, helping reduce top-edge lifting, chipping, and fraying in suitable materials such as wood, MDF, laminated panels, and selected plastics. This makes it a useful alternative to conventional up-cut end mills when top-surface finish is a priority.

The .600" flute length provides extended cutting reach for profiles, contours, and routing operations requiring greater cutting depth. Because down-cut geometry pushes chips downward, suitable chip management is especially important in enclosed slots and pockets.

The square end geometry is suitable for profiling, slotting, pocketing, contouring, and creating flat-bottom features. Solid carbide construction provides rigidity and wear resistance for precision machining.

Common Applications

  • Precision CNC routing and profiling
  • Woodworking and CNC wood cutting
  • MDF and suitable laminated sheet materials
  • Clean top-edge cutting in wood and selected plastics
  • Plastic and acrylic machining
  • Detail routing, contours, and narrow profiles
  • Small slots and pockets with suitable chip evacuation
  • Foam and selected specialty soft materials
  • Hobby CNC, prototype work, and light production machining

Features & Benefits

  • 1/8" (.1250") cutting diameter: Common size for precision CNC routing, profiles, and slots.
  • Down-cut geometry: Helps reduce top-edge lifting and fraying in suitable materials.
  • .600" length of cut: Offers additional reach for deeper profiles and routing operations.
  • 2-flute geometry: Provides two cutting edges with space for chip removal.
  • Square end: Suitable for profiles, slots, pockets, contours, and flat-bottom features.
  • Solid carbide construction: Provides rigidity and wear resistance for precision cutting.
  • 1/8" shank: Compatible with appropriate CNC collets and toolholders.

Down-Cut vs. Up-Cut End Mills

Down-cut end mills direct chips downward toward the workpiece and can help improve top-edge quality in sheet and panel materials prone to lifting, chipping, or fraying.

Up-cut end mills direct chips upward and generally provide better chip evacuation from deeper slots and enclosed pockets.

Choose the appropriate geometry based on your material, cutting depth, top-edge finish requirements, and chip removal needs.

Important Machining Considerations

This 1/8" down-cut end mill with .600" flute length provides useful cutting reach but requires appropriate machining conditions. Use rigid workholding, precision toolholding, minimal spindle runout, suitable spindle speeds, controlled depths of cut, and carefully selected feed rates.

Down-cut caution: Down-cut spiral flutes push chips downward. When cutting enclosed slots or pockets, use suitable chip clearing, conservative passes, and appropriate machining parameters to prevent chip packing, excessive cutting forces, and premature tool breakage.
