About Chip Breaker PCB Router Bits


Chip-breaker flute geometry is designed for applications where long or stringy chips can clog the cutting path. The segmented cutting edges repeatedly interrupt the chip, helping material clear the cut more efficiently during routing, slotting, trimming, and profile cutting.

Where Chip-Breaker Routers Work Well

These solid carbide routers are especially useful for PCB board outlines, slots, cutouts, and laminate trimming. They can also be used in fiberglass, G10, FR-4, phenolic laminates, plastics, composites, aluminum, and other non-ferrous materials.

Chip Breaker vs. Diamond Flute

Chip-breaker geometry is a good choice when efficient chip removal and reduced clogging are important. For brittle PCB laminates where a cleaner finished edge is the priority, a diamond-flute router may be preferable.

Fish Tail vs. Drill Point Tips

Fish Tail: Commonly used for through-routing and profile cutting. The tip geometry helps provide controlled cutting at the bottom edge of the workpiece.

Drill Point: Better suited when the router must plunge directly into the material or when repeated plunging is part of the operation.

Choosing Length of Cut (LOC)

Choose an LOC appropriate for the actual cutting depth. For through-cutting sheet material, the cutting length should extend beyond the material thickness. For grooves, slots, pockets, or partial-depth cuts, choose an LOC deep enough for the required cut. Very small-diameter routers become more fragile as cutting length increases, particularly in abrasive materials such as FR-4, G10, fiberglass, and carbon-fiber composites.
