About Diamond Flute PCB Router Bits
Diamond-flute routers use a fine, multi-edge cutting pattern that is gentler on brittle and fracture-prone materials than more aggressive router geometries. This makes them useful where clean edges and controlled cutting are especially important.
Where Diamond-Flute Routers Work Well
These solid carbide routers are commonly used for PCB board outlines, slots, cutouts, laminate trimming, fiberglass routing, and composite work. They are particularly well suited for FR-4, G10, fiberglass, phenolic laminates, abrasive composites, and similar brittle materials.
Why Choose Diamond-Flute Geometry
The fine multi-edge flute pattern helps minimize chipping, delamination, and material fracture while maintaining controlled cutting and good edge quality. Where faster chip removal is the priority, a chip-breaker router may be preferable.
Fish Tail vs. Drill Point Tips
Fish Tail: Often preferred for through-routing and controlled cutting in brittle or layered materials where backside breakout and edge quality are concerns.
Drill Point: Better suited where the router must plunge directly into the material, where repeated plunging is part of the operation, or where additional tip strength is desirable.
Choosing Length of Cut (LOC)
LOC is the usable cutting length of the router bit. For through-cutting sheet material, choose an LOC longer than the material thickness. For grooves, slots, pockets, or partial-depth cuts, choose an LOC deep enough for the required cut. Very small-diameter routers become more fragile as cutting length increases, particularly in abrasive materials such as FR-4, G10, fiberglass, and carbon-fiber composites.
