About O-Flute End Mills
O-flute end mills use a large, open flute design that provides generous chip clearance. This makes them especially effective in plastics and other softer materials where heat buildup, chip welding, or material melting can become a problem.
Where O-Flute End Mills Work Well
O-flute tools are commonly used for cutting, slotting, profiling, trimming, and routing plastics such as acrylic, HDPE, polycarbonate, and similar materials. They can also be useful in soft aluminum and other suitable non-ferrous materials when chip evacuation and heat control are important.
Why Choose O-Flute Geometry
The open flute provides more room for chips to clear the cutting area. This helps reduce recutting, heat buildup, and chip welding, which can improve finish quality in plastics and other materials that tend to soften or melt during machining.
Up-Cut vs. Down-Cut O-Flutes
Up-Cut: Pulls chips upward and away from the cut, generally providing the strongest chip evacuation.
Down-Cut: Pushes chips downward and can help maintain a cleaner top edge, but requires good chip clearance because chips are directed into the cut.
Coated vs. Uncoated
Uncoated or polished O-flute tools are often preferred for plastics because they promote clean chip flow. Coated O-flutes, including TiN-coated tools, may be useful in soft aluminum and other suitable non-ferrous materials where additional wear resistance is helpful.
Choosing Length of Cut (LOC)
Choose an LOC appropriate for the actual cutting depth. Avoid using more cutting length than necessary, since longer tools generally have less rigidity and may be more prone to deflection.
